Sunday Sermon Outline

Honoring God by Honoring Our Parents
Pastor Steve Choi
May 10, 2026

Colossians 3:20 (ESV)
Children, obey your parents in everything, for this pleases the Lord.

Ephesians 6:1–3 (ESV)
1
Children, obey your parents in the Lord, for this is right.
2 “Honor your father and mother” (this is the first commandment with a promise),
3 “that it may go well with you and that you may live long in the land.”

Main Idea: On this mother’s day we look at the command to obey and honor our parents. As Christians, we view our relationship with our parents in a distinct manner from the world. The call to honor our parents is not for just the deserving persons but it is a call from God to his people. Today we will see what honor means and how honor our parents to the glory of God.

I. The Meaning of Honor (Ephesians 6:2, Mark 7:9-13)

  • Parents are given a seasonal authority over children, but they are endowed with perpetual honor.  – R. Kent Hughes

II. How Do We Honor Our Parents?

    1. Spend Time (Proverbs 23:22, Psalm 71:9)
    1. Speak Well (Exodus 21:15, 17)
    1. Provide (1 Timothy 5:8, Ruth 1:16)
    1. Forgive (Col. 3:13)

John 19:26–27 (ESV)
26
When Jesus saw his mother and the disciple whom he loved standing nearby, he said to his mother, “Woman, behold, your son!”
27 Then he said to the disciple, “Behold, your mother!” And from that hour the disciple took her to his own home.
